The Carbon Performance assessment of international shipping methodology note - version 1.0 outlines how major shipping companies are evaluated against international climate targets, including those established under the Paris Agreement. The methodology benchmarks companies’ emissions intensity against sector-specific decarbonisation pathways, helping investors assess how aligned shipping companies are with the transition to a low-carbon global transport system.

Using the Sectoral Decarbonisation Approach (SDA), the framework translates global greenhouse-gas reduction goals into measurable benchmarks for the international shipping sector. It compares companies’ emissions intensity - typically measured relative to freight transport activity - with benchmark pathways derived from climate scenarios, enabling analysis of whether companies’ current and projected emissions trajectories are consistent with global climate targets.

While superseded by newer versions, this 2019 methodology note remains a foundational reference for understanding TPI’s early Carbon Performance framework for international shipping.
